Brief introduction to IRAS

All IRAS data products released by the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) are available electronically via this interface to the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) archives. The development of this interface was sponsored by the Astrophysics Data Facility (ADF) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. NSSDC, ADF, and The Infrared Science Archive (IRSA) at IPAC are partners in providing access to IRAS data and documentation.

This interface is principally for data retrieval. The catalogs and images are generally in ASCII or FITS format. Browsing of the data is not supported here, but please note that IRAS images for the Galactic plane may be browsed at the Multiwavelength Milky Way page.

Most of the products that can be ordered through this interface are stored in the NASA Data Archive and Distribution Service (NDADS), a robotic optical disk jukebox. A partially-completed NDADS request form is returned when a Request "button" is selected; generally, to complete the form, you will only need to provide information specifying the desired destination of the requested file(s). Catalogs that are also available on the Astronomical Data Center (ADC) CD-ROMs or the ISSA CD-ROMs are indicated with the logo . Several of the ADC catalogs are also accessible via ftp as indicated.

The printed Explanatory Supplements that accompanied many of the IRAS data products and are referred to in the documentation provided here may be ordered from the NSSDC. Some of the Explanatory Supplements may be browsed online.

Special Note: The High-Resolution IRAS Galaxy Atlas (IGA) has 60 and 100 micron maps at ~1' resolution for the Galactic latitude range |b| < 4.7° and selected regions at higher latitudes. The on-line IGA service at IPAC permits images for small fields to be browsed and extracted. The complete IGA, which is not yet available on-line here, may be ordered on tape or CD-R. Contact the Coordinated Request User Support Office (CRUSO) for more information. Depending on the affiliation of the requestor, a fee may be charged.
Browsing of the data is not supported here, but please note that IRAS images for the Galactic plane may be browsed at the Multiwavelength Milky Way page.
