A Simple to Use, Interactive Graphics Software Package.
What is WIP?
WIP
is an interactive package
with a simple to use command line user interface
used to produce high quality graphical output.
WIP
was developed as part of the
Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland
Association (BIMA) project.
If you use WIP in your publications,

WIP Version History
Note:: As of March 2001 WIP and MIRIAD are together maintained under CVS.
It also includes a new directory 'contrib' in which user contributed scripts
and examples are located.
The current version of WIP is 2.3.9 (released 28 February 2007), though
possibly later if the author of this webpage was forgetful (he often is).
The following list identifies files that outline the changes and bug fixes
made to WIP to get it to a particular version.
The WIP User's Manual
The WIP User's Manual
has recently been upgraded for the latest version of WIP.
In addition to the on-line version of the manual,
there is a PostScript version.
The PostScript version of the manual can be found in the WIP archive
or it can be retrieved independently (see below for details).
Retrieval of WIP
For up to date info to retrieve WIP via CVS, see the
BIMA-MIRIAD page.
The WIP
anonymous ftp directory
has the following to offer:
- A (gzipped) compressed tar file (1.3 Mbytes) that contains the
latest release of WIP.
This tar file includes both the source code of WIP
and a complete up-to-date manual.
Note: Building this code requires an ANSI C-compiler.
- A file that contains
information
on accessing the contents of the WIP archive
and building WIP.
-
A (gzipped) compressed PostScript file (0.4 Mbytes) that contains the
most recent version of the WIP manual (150 pages).
This PostScript file has the
figures from the examples embedded within the document.
This is the document that was used to generate
the on-line version of the manual.
- A file that contains
information
on obtaining the latest PGPLOT release.
PGPLOT must be built before WIP
can be compiled;
hence it is important that you have a relatively recent
(5.1.0 or later) version of PGPLOT
available on your system.
Each release of WIP specifies the oldest version of
PGPLOT that is required to build WIP.
The latest archive
release of PGPLOT
can also be retrieved directly via the World Wide Web.
Note: Starting with version 2.0 of WIP,
the user is also required to build the PGPLOT C-binding
library.
See the PGPLOT installation notes for more details.
- A csh
script called saoimage.csh that can be used to convert a lookup
table (LUT) written by saoimage into something that WIP
can use (via it's own
lookup command).
-
A compressed tar file (49 kbytes) that contains information and
programs that will convert gray scale images to color halftones.
Note: This code is no longer needed beginning
with WIP version 2.0.
Code for directly creating color
images was incorporated in WIP at that time.
Author Information
WIP was originally written by James Morgan,
while working in the
Laboratory for Millimeter-Wave Astronomy, part of
BIMA, in the
Astronomy Department of the
University of Maryland at College Park.
WIP is now maintained within the MIRIAD package.
