CARA Science

CARA's scientific mission is to take advantage of the unique characteristics of the South Pole as an observatory site to study the evolution of structure in the Universe. The long cold winter, the ceaseless sky availability, the dry conditions, and the uniformity of the weather lend themselves to observations simply not possible at temperate sites. The site provides a critical advantage for deep, large-scale observations at infrared, submillimeter, and millimeter wavelengths. The science goals for CARA instruments include:

Formation of large-scale structure in the early Universe
The origins of star-forming molecular clouds
The origin and evolution of protostars and young stars
The interaction between molecular clouds and young stars
