Research
Palmer's primary research interest is star formation. Radio spectroscopic studies probe the densest parts of the interstellar medium where stars have recently formed or are about to form. As a hobby, he also studies comets because the environment of a comet's coma is fairly similar to interstellar gas, and because comets are the most pristine remaining sample of the material from which our star, the Sun, formed.
