Research
Experimental physics, infrared astronomy
Hildebrand and his students study the properties of interstellar magnetic fields and interstellar dust by means of far-infrared polarimetry. This technique has made it possible to map field configurations associated with filamentary clouds, rotating clouds, shock fronts, and other interstellar features, and has made it possible to infer the temperatures and exposure to radiation of domains within molecular clouds
