Job Opportunities | ASTROPHYSICS |
The Astrophysics Group at the Cavendish Laboratory is developing a system for correcting atmospheric phase fluctuations on the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (see www.alma.ac.uk ). This system uses millimetre-wave radiometers to make accurate measurements of the 183GHz emission line of water vapour. We are seeking a researcher to work on the testing and further development of the prototype radiometers which we have built in collaboration with a group from the Onsala Space Observatory in Sweden. Laboratory testing will be carried out in Cambridge and Onsala and these will be followed by trials at the ALMA test facility in New Mexico. This is an opportunity to get involved in a key aspect of the ALMA project at an early stage. Proposed start date: as soon as possible.
A degree is required, and either a PhD or substantial experience in a relevant area of Physics, Astronomy or Electrical Engineering is essential. Knowledge of micro- or millimetre-wave receivers or of other forms of astronomical instrumentation would be highly advantageous. Good organisational and communication skills are essential and applicants should be in a position to do a considerable amount of travelling.
Further information may be obtained from: Mrs. Kate Gilbert, Cavendish
