The Very Small Array

ASTROPHYSICS

Status

The VSA finished observing in the compact array configuration in September 2001, after a year of observing. The results from this first season, covering the multipole range l = 150-900, were released in a series of four papers, currently in press at Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The telescope was then refitted with new, larger antennas and the antennas moved to a more widely spaced arrangement giving l coverage up to 1400. Observing with the extended array configuration has been continuing since October 2001. The first results from the extended array were released in December 2002, based on nine fields in three overlapping regions. Observations are continuing in this configuration with the aim of increasing the amount of data by a factor of four over the Dec 02 release. The telescope will then be reconfigured for even higher resolution observations. It is also planned to further increase the antenna size to allow observations with good temperature sensitivity up to l = 2500.
